Culture

The Saint-Vaast Church in Cuvergnon reflects several periods of construction. It was built in the first half of the 12th century and features a distinctive Romanesque façade from the 11th century. Its small Romanesque portal is decorated with broken shafts and stylised bird-beak motifs. At the beginning of the 16th century, the church was extended with a large hall choir. The choir is adorned with a high altar and an altarpiece. The church dates mainly from the late 16th century and preserves older elements from the 12th and 13th centuries.

A pilgrimage was formerly held around Saint-Vaast Church, particularly on 6 February, during which Saint-Vaast was invoked on behalf of children with walking difficulties.

History

Les Tournelles Farm was formerly a fortified fief; Grandchamp appears to have developed around the farm. Plessis-le-Boulgre Farm was formerly an estate dependent on Crépy.

The flint objects found around Cuvergnon include hand axes, scrapers, burins, points and other tools. The Pierre Saint-Vaast is a large sandstone block on the road to Bargny. Pilgrimages were formerly held there on the first Sundays in May and October, with prayers for the healing of frail children.

Cuvergnon is the birthplace of the actress Palmyre Augustine Thion, known as Palmire Levasseur, who was born on 24 December 1888. The hamlet of La Cantine marks the boundary between Cuvergnon and Antilly and recalls Cuvergnon’s industrial past as accommodation for the workers of Antilly’s beet-grating plant.
