Saint-Pierremont: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In the hamlet of Saint-Pierremont in Avril stands the former Saint-Pierremont Abbey. Lubricus, a canon from Metz, founded it in 1090. The abbey was finally abandoned in 1733; part of its 18th-century abbey buildings has been preserved. The dovecote of the former abbey was protected as a historic monument by a decree dated 20 January 1979.

Culture and History

In Avril stands the parish church “Eglise paroissiale de L'Assomption,” dating from the first half of the 19th century. The single-nave building has an elongated floor plan, a semicircular apse, and a tower integrated into the façade. Its furnishings include a set of 12 figurative stained-glass windows. The scenes depicted include the biblical events Pentecost, the Assumption of Mary, the Visitation, and the Annunciation. Ten windows in the set were made in 1928, 1932, and 1956 by the Benoît workshop in Nancy; the church’s choir windows were restored.

Another historical trace is the former Cordeliers monastery in La Chapelle-aux-Bois. Jeanne de Pulligny and her husband Didier de Landre founded it around 1480. The former monastery fell into disrepair in the 17th century, was moved to Briey around 1710, and dissolved in 1791.

Nature and Activities

In the wider area around Avril, the Pérotin site was established in 1909 after a hot-water spring was discovered during drilling in the municipality of Avril. From 1910 onward, visitors came to this Pérotin hot-water spring in the area around Avril. The Club Vosgien built a footbridge over the Conroy, making the spring more easily accessible from Moyeuvre-Petite.

The Pérotin spring stopped flowing at the beginning of the 1970s; a damaged intake pipe is suspected as a possible cause. As another offering, Au cheval d'Avril provides riding lessons, horse boarding, trail rides, walks, and birthday activities.

The “Balade en forêt d'Avril” hike runs almost entirely through woodland.
