The Colline de Sion-Vaudémont reaches an altitude of 540 metres, making it the highest elevation in the relief of the Côtes de Moselle. As a geological hill in the Côtes de Moselle, it offers exceptional views across the landscapes of the Saintois as far as the Vosges ridges.

Culture

The Site archéologique de la Colline de Sion had been inhabited since the Middle Neolithic; an intensive period of use occurred during the Late Bronze Age. The site was inhabited from the Iron Age through the Early Middle Ages and became a place of worship during the Early Middle Ages.

The Cité des Paysages offers a permanent tour of nearly 600 m², accessible to everyone, covering the Colline de Sion-Vaudémont – from its geological formation and the first traces of human settlement to later changes in the landscape. Workshops, exhibitions, night walks and nature excursions are also offered; a programme is created each year for a season running from April to November.

Notre-Dame de Sion was venerated as a pilgrimage site on the Colline de Sion.

Landscape

The southern part of the Colline de Sion-Vaudémont comprises calcareous grassland with numerous protected animals and plants.

Trails and programme

The Sentier des Crêtes follows the hill’s ridges and offers panoramic views across the region. The Circuit des Pierres de Sion is an approximately 8 km circular route where visitors can discover the stars of Sion and other distinctive geological formations of the hill. The Sentier des Légendes is a themed trail with information panels explaining the many legends surrounding the hill.

Surroundings

In the wider regional surroundings of Saxon-Sion are the ancient site of Cité d'Affrique and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Joseph d'Ubexy monastery. Also located in the wider regional surroundings are the ruins of Abbaye de Clairlieu, Grotte Sainte-Reine cave, the Côte de Virine summit, Bonnet hill and the Musée de la Brasserie museum.

The La Colline Inspirée hill is located in the immediate vicinity of Saxon-Sion.
