It is 11 kilometres long and includes an ascent of 290 metres; it also passes the Grotte des Poilus, which served as a medical station during the First World War. It stands on the site of the Village-Nègre, a former French cantonment near the front.

History
The Nécropole Nationale in Badonviller is open daily all year round. It preserves the remains of 2,653 French soldiers from the First World War and 28 French soldiers who fell between 1939 and 1945. The Nécropole Nationale also contains a sculpture commemorating those who fell at La Chapelotte. It originally stood at the Col de La Chapelotte and was later moved to this memorial site.
The Sentier de mémoire du Col de la Chapelotte passes through an area on the border between Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Vosges, where fierce fighting took place between 1915 and 1918. The forest paths along the trail make it possible to explore remains of the First World War and preserved structures between the French and German rear fronts. At the Sentier de mémoire du Col de la Chapelotte, visitors can discover these remains accompanied by dedicated guides from the Guerre en Vosges association.
