History
The Église Saint-Maximin has an Early Gothic choir dating from the 13th century and a nave from the Late Gothic period of the late 15th century; it was extended in 1765. Since 1982, the church has been listed in France’s Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. Since its renovation in 2005, guided tours have taken place there every year during the Heritage Days.
The Château de Moncel is a 12th-century château with a drawbridge and moats. In the 19th century, it was converted into a rectangular manor house in the Lorraine style.
Culture
The Maison d’Elsa is a municipal cultural centre in Jarny with a media library and a theatre with 110 seats. At the Maison d’Elsa, the Micro-Folie in Jarny comprises four modules: a digital museum, a stage area, a FabLab and a virtual reality area.
The MuZIKales de Jarny take place throughout the city over one week in June. Almost 30 music groups and ensembles perform in bars, in the square, at the Maison d’Elsa and at the École Municipale de Musique.
Nature
The Parc de Moncel covers 17 hectares and features a landscape arboretum, picnic areas, a fitness trail and ponds for fishing. The forests, ponds and streams of the Parc de Moncel form an ecologically rich continuous area within Jarny’s green and blue network. The park is open all year round, and admission is free.
The Petit Étang is a wetland with a walking path, an observation pontoon and a footbridge from which aquatic flora and fauna can be observed. The Marais de Droitaumont is a subsidence wetland designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS).
The Carreau de la Mine de Droitaumont is accessible via walking paths and offers the opportunity to observe dragonflies, butterflies, red-backed shrikes and storks. The site of the Mine de Droitaumont was cleared and developed with a playground, walking paths and a fishing area.
Geographical Location
The 130-kilometre Metz-Madine circular route passes through Jarny. The Gare de Conflans-Jarny railway station became a multimodal transport hub in 2007; this function was strengthened in 2023 by the city’s cycling plan.
Those exploring Jarny between the Parc de Moncel and the Maison d’Elsa may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
