Culture and history
The Croix Saint-Claude, also known as the Croix des Pestiférés, is the oldest monument in Laxou and dates from 1586. It was erected after the plague epidemic of 1584 so that plague victims could take part in outdoor celebrations.
The present-day Église Saint-Genès is the fifth religious building on this site; the foundation stone for the current building was laid on 8 July 1877. The church has no choir. Instead, a new bay and a wall were built, with the altar placed against it.
The former Saint-Paul church in Laxou was built in 1963 and later converted into the Espace Europe, a venue for conferences and performances.
The cultural programme also encompasses various formats: “En Dehors des Sentiers Battus” is a triennial open-air art exhibition in Laxou. Since its creation in 2003, works by artists have been displayed on paths, in parks, orchards and gardens; in total, there have been nearly 100 works. The Bibliothèque-Médiathèque Gérard Thirion hosts around ten exhibitions per year and regularly organises accompanying talks with artists and creative workshops.
Near Laxou is the Palais Ducal, a palace. The area is also home to the Domaine de l'Automobile Lorraine, a museum, and the Cité d'Affrique, an archaeological site. The Abbaye de Clairlieu, a ruin site, is also located nearby.
Nature and landscape
The Parc d'agrément du Champ-le-Boeuf was created on the site of a former quarry and covers nine hectares, with children's playgrounds, recreational areas and walking paths.
The Forêt domaniale de Haye extends over 6,034 hectares and includes Laxou and six other municipalities; since 2018, it has been designated as a protected forest. The Parc du Fond de Lavaux is an official LPO nature reserve on the slopes above the village, with a semi-wooded meadow, an orchard, beehives and a project to create a wetland.
In the wider regional surroundings of Laxou is the Grotte Sainte-Reine, a cave. The Mont Toulon and Mont Saint-Michel, both hills, are also located there. The Parc Naturel Régional de Lorraine, a regional park, is also situated near Laxou.
