Bouxières-aux-Dames: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Église Saint-Martin has a 15th-century choir with a ribbed vault. Wall paintings were discovered in this choir in 1974 and restored in 2017 and 2020; the choir vault depicts Christ in the Last Judgment and the Tetramorph with the symbols of the four Evangelists.

Culture

The protected status of the Église Saint-Martin, granted on 25 June 2015, fully covers the choir with its wall paintings, as well as the façades and roof of the church, excluding the sacristy. The Chapelle Saint-Antoine was built in 1582 on the road from the village to the abbey as a repository for the Corpus Christi procession.

The Crypte de saint Gauzelin is considered one of the oldest crypts in France. Its western wall has three windows and herringbone masonry. The foundation charter of the Abbaye de Bouxières-aux-Dames is dated 13 January 938.

The Domaine des Tilles includes a canonical and prévôtal Hôtel du Chapitre of the Chanoinesses of Bouxières, built in 1640. The Salle Guingot is located in a former public girls’ school building, constructed in 1875 and used as a school until the Groupe scolaire Franchi opened on Rue Alsace-Lorraine in 1961.

Paths and nature

The municipal hiking trails mainly comprise two circular routes measuring 2.6 and 3.4 kilometres respectively. Visitors can walk around the Étang de Merrey, where fishing is permitted. The Étang de Merrey is a protected biotope and a breeding area for amphibians.

The Pelouse can be reached by car via Rue de l’Abbaye and then Rue des Carrosses. From the Étang de Merrey, it can be reached on foot via forest paths. Its avenues were created around 1750, when 300 lime trees were transplanted there from the forest. The Pelouse is a place for walks and offers a fitness trail for those who enjoy sports. The Fête des Tilleuls takes place there in September.

The Circuit de Bouxières-aux-Dames begins at the Pelouse des Dames and leads through picturesque lanes and rural paths. Along the route, there are markings bearing the abbey seal and explanatory panels. The circuit offers a short route of approximately 0.5 km dedicated to the abbey, as well as a 2.56 km complete route through the lower town. Its points of interest have QR codes for use with a smartphone.

The hiking trails make it possible to experience Bouxières-aux-Dames’ still-rural, nature-oriented character.

Visiting

The Lavoir des Maures opposite the town hall was renovated in 2004. The lavoirs of Bouxières-aux-Dames can be visited independently and exclusively from the outside, without a guided tour.
