Furiani is home to the Chapelle Santa-Maria-Assunta and the Tour Paoline. The Chapelle Santa-Maria-Assunta was classified as a historic monument by decree of 16 October 1992. Its apse preserves fragments of 15th-century frescoes depicting saints. The chapel apparently emerged in two construction phases.
One possible travel purpose is to rent a holiday apartment in Furiani.
Culture and History
The Tour Paoline is the surviving remnant of the former castle of Furiani. After 1763, it was completely rebuilt by Pascal Paoli. The towers of Furiani and Nonza are the only square towers built under Pascal Paoli. The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is located in the Orticcione district in the upper village of Furiani.
Santa Maria was the Pieve chapel of Furiani, as Furiani was the centre of the Pieve d’Orto. The Tour de Furiani has been fully listed as a historic monument since 29 July 1987.
Nature
Furiani shares the protected natural area of the Étang de Biguglia, known for its ornithological importance, with Biguglia, Borgo and Lucciana. With an area of 1,450 hectares, the Biguglia lagoon is the largest lagoon in Corsica. The Rives de l’Étang de Biguglia area encompasses reed beds, maquis and sand dunes on the Marana Lido.
The lagoon contains two islands: the Île des Pêcheurs in the northwest, where the Fortin de Biguglia was built, and the Île San Damiano in the centre of the lagoon.
Hiking and Water
The hike to the Santa Maria Chapel begins in the upper village of Furiani. The trail to the Chapelle Sant’Antone leads to a spring beneath chestnut trees.
The Club Nautique Bastiais offers maritime activities from Tombulu Biancu beach on the Marana Lido in Furiani. The Club Nautique Bastiais rents stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, kayaks, windsurfing boards, dinghies and catamarans.
Culture at the Étang
The Écomusée du Fortin on the Route de l’étang in Furiani presents the history of the Biguglia lagoon, as well as topics relating to fauna and flora, migration, fishing and wetlands. The Écomusée du Fortin is currently closed to the public indefinitely.
Local Production
The Brasserie Pietra opened in Furiani in 1996 and produced a Corsican beer made from a mixture of malt and Corsican chestnut flour. In July and August, the Brasserie Pietra offers guided tours and tastings.
