Chiatra: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Chiatra is situated on a ridge that separates the Alesani – Alisgiani in Corsican – to the north from its tributary, the Picchio (Picchju), to the south.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Chiatra can put the village on their list of potential destinations.

Geographical Location

The Alesani Valley, whose right bank belongs to Chiatra, is wild here; its valley floor is flooded by the reservoir of the Alesani dam, which lies on the northern boundary of the municipality.

The old part of Chiatra offers panoramic views over the Alesani reservoir. A second panoramic viewpoint in Chiatra extends over Mont Oppido and the plain to the sea.

Culture and History

The former Church of San Nicolao was built in the 10th century; today, only three arches remain. The Baroque chapel of Saint Pancrace, built in 1835, stands in the village square.

Chiatra has three Genoese towers dating from the early 16th century. The parish church of the Annunciation is designed in the Italian Baroque style and has six chapels, an altar, a façade and a bell tower. In the centre of the altar is a carved wooden tabernacle. The church also displays a marble sculpture of the praying Virgin dating from the 17th century.

Mont Oppido was a strategic point where the Romans built an oppidum.

Hiking and Trails

The circular trail Circuit des sources et des fontaines leads to six fountains – Piazza Cummuna, Calina, fontana Vecchia, Santa Croce, Vitti and U salge – and then back to the village square.

The hike De Chiatra à Canale takes 1 hour 45 minutes there and back. The Sentier de Chiatra is an easy 3 km circular trail that starts and ends in Chiatra. The hike Le lac (barrage d’Alesani) takes 3 to 3.5 hours and returns to the starting point.

Local Activities

A riding course can be found on site at Ferme Auberge MARCHI in the hamlet of Nivolaccio. In the modern part of Chiatra, there are various fountains where visitors can refresh themselves.

Cuisine

At L'Orsaghja, evenings with “cabri à la broche” as well as cheese and beignet tastings are organised by arrangement. L'Orsaghja sells cheese directly at the cheese dairy, ranging from fresh and creamy varieties to more mature varieties.
