Culture and History

The Chapelle San-Cervone is a Romanesque chapel believed to have been built in the 13th century and was registered as a historic monument on 29 July 1987. It stands on the grounds of Lavatoggio's municipal cemetery, on the site of a vanished medieval village.

The Lavoir communal in Lavatoggio is also fully protected as a historic monument; it was registered on 29 July 1987. The Couvent de Marcasso and the Couvent Saint-Dominique monasteries are located in the vicinity of Lavatoggio. The historic site of Couvent d'Alzi Prato and Fort Mozzelo are also located in the surrounding area.

Nature and Landscape

Lavatoggio lies within the ZNIEFF type 2 “Oliveraies et boisements des collines de Balagne”, which covers an area of 1,958.78 hectares. This ZNIEFF includes remnants of Balagne's former wooded landscape, including ancient olive groves as well as downy oak and holm oak stands.

The Capu di Bestia mountain peak is located near Lavatoggio. The Capu d'Occi mountain is also nearby. Monte Longu and Plage de Bodri beach are located in the vicinity of Lavatoggio.

Townscape and Traditions

Of Lavatoggio's three communal fountains, the Funtana di u Turiolu is considered the most remarkable. A large fountain complex can be reached via the lanes behind Lavatoggio's church; the water is not drinkable. Lavatoggio's paved streets are suitable for sightseeing.

An annual pilgrimage to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Stella on 8 September has been recorded. A procession for the Chapelle San-Cervone is recorded on 10 October, the feast day of its patron saint.
