Nonza: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The history of Nonza includes the Tour de Nonza ou de Torra. For more than 800 years, it played a military role; its function alternated between that of a lordly tower, coastal tower, defensive structure, and symbolic political marker of identity. By decree of 5 July 1926, it was listed as a historic monument. The Tour de Nonza ou de Torra is surrounded by the remains of walls that probably formed a kind of bastion.
History and Traces
The Église Sainte-Julie was listed as a historic monument by decree of 6 December 1984. It is considered a Venetian Baroque building and is dedicated to the martyr Sainte-Julie.
A staircase with 54 steps leads from Nonza’s northern entrance to the Fontaine Sainte Julie. Its water is believed to have miraculous powers.
The rock paintings of the Grotta Scritta date from the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC.
Trails and Coast
The circular trail “Les terrasses et la marine” is 1.5 kilometres long, easy, laid out as a loop, marked in yellow, and listed as taking one hour. The circular trail leads from the village of Nonza to the black beach and back through restored terraces associated with the history of citron cultivation.
Nonza’s large beach can be reached on foot in about five minutes via a path on the left.
Trade and Cultivation
Until the 18th century, the ruins of the Marine de Nonza were among the most important trading posts at Cap Corse. In the warehouses of the Marine de Nonza, citrons were stored either whole in crates or sliced in barrels containing seawater.
