The Citadel of Omessa stands on a rocky spur above the former Roman road that connected the north and south of Corsica. In the 15th century, three bishops born within the Citadel of Omessa helped give Omessa the motto “Roma caput mundi, Omessa secundi”. In the 17th century, Recollect Franciscan friars settled in Omessa and shaped the entire area.

Culture and history
The Église Saint-André has a bell tower classified as a historic monument and houses Italian paintings as well as a fresco. During the most recent restoration of the interior of the Église Saint-André, a remarkable fresco from the 14th or 15th century was discovered in a side chapel.
The Fortress of Supietra was built in the 12th century by Amandino to defend a difficult and dangerous passage between Bastia and Corte. A large part of the fortress was destroyed during the anti-feudal uprising of 1357 led by Sambucucciu d'Alandu; today, only ruins remain. The fortress lies at an altitude of around 400 metres and overlooks the hamlet of Caporalinu.
Nature
The protected rocky cliff of Caporalino is home to at least seven bird species, three species of birds of prey, nine bat species, as well as reptiles and insects. The animal species mentioned are protected at national level. Notable plants in Caporalino include Brassica insularis, also known as “island cabbage” and endemic, as well as Helicodiceros muscivorus, also known as “fly-eating arum”.
Hiking
The Chapelle Sant'Angelo is considered a true watchtower between the granite-dominated western side of Corsica and the schist-dominated eastern side. It lies at an altitude of almost 1,200 metres between the municipalities of Lano and Omessa. A hike in central Corsica between the Pieve of Talcini and Vallerustie allows visitors to discover the Romanesque Chapelle Sant'Angelo as a feature of cultural and historical significance.
