Hiking
The Boucle 24 can be started in Ortale. It is 11.5 kilometres long and intended for experienced hikers.
Boucle 25 can be accessed from Ortale. The loop is 3.8 kilometres long, takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk, and is recommended for a family outing.
The Boucle Santa Maria is a very accessible, shaded trail below the village and takes just under an hour. It can be extended with a detour to the Bussu, a river that crosses the Alesani Valley.
The “Mare a Mare Nord” long-distance hiking trail runs near Ortale. Thanks to the voluntary work of the organisation behind the L’Alisgianinca trail, a 31-kilometre path was also created, allowing all the villages of Alesani to be crossed up close or from a distance.
Culture and History
Not far from the present-day village, the Romanesque Santa Maria chapel from the 9th century is still visible. The current main church, Santa Maria Assunta, was probably built in the 17th century as its replacement.
Ortale’s historic lanes include old manor houses. Another connection to the village’s history is the old road known as “Théodore”, which connects Ortale with Cervione.
Local Tradition
In December, Ortale hosts “Chataîgne Passion”, a chestnut festival.
