Monticello: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Culture and History
The Saint-François-Xavier Chapel dates back to the 17th century, while its dome dates from the 18th century; both are classified as historic monuments. The parish church of San Sebastianu dates back to the early 17th century. Inside is the painting “Le martyre de saint Sébastien”, a work painted on canvas and dated 1710, which is also classified as a historic monument.
In the heart of the village of Monticello is the San Carlo Borromée confraternity chapel, A Casazza, which dates from 1697. It houses a Corsican-Italian organ from 1733 as well as a painting by the artist Giacomo Grandi from the mid-18th century. The Saint-François-Xavier Chapel, also known as San Francescu, is located in the hills southeast of the village. The historic centre includes narrow streets and vaulted passageways around the 17th-century parish church of San Sebastianu.
Traditions
The tradition in honour of Saint Roch – Saint-Roch or San Roccu – traditionally takes place on 16 August. It includes a mass in the San Francescu church and a procession during which residents carry the statue of the saint and bless horses. Following the Saint-Roch ceremony, chickpea soup is served free of charge.
Those choosing Monticello as their travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
