Castineta: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Castineta was built on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 875 metres. The municipality consists of the three hamlets of Castineta Sottana, Castineta Soprana and Mazza.

Anyone wishing to travel to Castineta can combine their stay with the intention of renting a holiday apartment.

Nature

The municipal area of Castineta is covered by dense vegetation comprising holm oaks, downy oaks, maritime pines, chestnut trees and beech trees. The Ruisseau de Prunitaccio is Castineta’s most important watercourse.

Castineta’s traditional economy appears to have been based on a combination of cereal cultivation, chestnut groves and olive growing.

Culture

Castineta’s village architecture includes slate roofs, tall houses and exterior staircases. Castineta has been documented in the Pieve Rostino since the late Middle Ages. Originally, the hamlets of Castineta and Gavignano formed a single unit and belonged to the parish of San Pantaleone.

The parish church of Saint-Sébastien has a single-nave layout and a presbytery covered by a barrel vault. The inscription “1726 RENOTA” appears on the monolithic lintel above the entrance to the Église paroissiale Saint-Sébastien.

The painting “Quatre saints aux pieds de la Vierge à l’Enfant” is located in the church of Castineta. The painting was registered as a protected object on 17 October 2001.

The Fontaine de Via Cava is built against a wall of slate and rubble stone. It has a spout made of hewn stone, from which the water flows into a basin below. The overgrown left-hand section of the Fontaine de Via Cava may have served as a washing place.

The former chestnut dryer in Castineta Sottana is now a residential house.
