Culture and history

The Saint-François d'Orezza Franciscan monastery is located near Pastoreccia in Piedicroce. It was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier complex dating back to 1485. During the Corsican revolutions from 1729 to 1769, numerous consultations or assemblies took place at Saint-François d'Orezza monastery.

The Church of Saint Pierre – Saint Paul in Piedicroce houses Corsica's oldest organ, built by Giorgio Spinola in 1619. The Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul was classified as a historic monument by decree of 12 October 1976. Its interior consists of a single nave and seven side chapels.

The Santa-Devota Chapel was built in the 17th century for a brotherhood of penitents. The tympanum above the entrance to Santa-Devota Chapel is decorated with a fresco.

Trails and landscape

Piedicroce is the starting point for various hikes on regional trails through green valleys. The village lies at the foot of Mont San Petrone, which is 1,767 metres high.

Itinerary F begins below the road, approximately 100 metres beyond the monastery ruins when coming from the direction of Piedicroce. The route passes through several noteworthy villages and runs in the shade for most of its length.

The Boucle 2 circular hike leads from Piedicroce via Stazzona, Piedipartino and Carcheto back to Piedicroce and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Local life

At the Mercatellu di Piedicroce, local producers meet in the village from 5 p.m. There is also a small craft-oriented cooperative association in Piedicroce that also serves as a bread sales outlet.
