Barbaggio: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

From Bastia, Barbaggio is described as the gateway to the Grand Site de France Conca d’Oru; the village can be reached by descending from the Col de Teghime. The village centre comprises the terraced hamlets of Piazze, Poggio and Gorgaccia, as well as the Church of San Marcellu.

Culture

The parish church of Saint-Marcel houses the 17th-century painting “Saint Jerome in the Desert”, which is listed as a protected object. The church is essentially an 18th-century building and contains older elements, including 16th-century gravestones. Its domed bell tower is also noteworthy.

The Chapel of San Petru dates from the 11th century and was the main church of the former Pieve of Patrimonio. Archaeological excavations uncovered a bell-casting pit and fragments of clay moulds there; the artisanal production structure discovered is described as unique in Corsica.

A restored casemate at the Col de Teghime allows visitors to tour an underground section of a former trench system, as well as an above-ground section with observation posts and the site of a former gun. The war memorial at the Col de Teghime commemorates a three-day battle in which 49 soldiers of the 2nd GTM were killed on 3 October 1943.

The 18th-century Molinaccio grain mill on the Quarcetto stream preserves structural elements of a mill for wheat and chestnuts, as well as a remaining limestone millstone measuring approximately 120 cm in diameter and 15 cm thick.

Hiking

The Sentier panoramique des Balcons between Barbaggio and Poggio d’Oletta is a difficult 10 km circular hike with an elevation gain of 175 m; it starts at the Belvédère of Barbaggio or on the RD 238. The trail offers uninterrupted views of the Conca d’Oru and the vineyards of Patrimonio, as well as views of the limestone range of Mont Sant’Anghjulu.

The Maison de l’évêque, with its medieval walls, stands along the Sentier panoramique des Balcons; it was a second residence of the bishops of Nebbiu. A Pagliaghju along the trail is a Corsican agro-pastoral building formerly used to store straw and occasionally as shelter for shepherds or their livestock.

The Serra di u Pignu / Glacières de Cardo hiking trail runs from the Serra di Pigno television relay station over the Barbaggio ridge to Cima di Gratera at 1,024 m. The hike offers views of the bays of Bastia and Saint-Florent.

Nature

The Type 1 ZNIEFF area “Défilé des Strette et Collines Calcaires de Saint-Florent” encompasses Barbaggio as well as the limestone hills and cliffs of Monte Sant’Angelo.

Wine

The Mlle D – Marie-Françoise Devichi winery in Barbaggio offers winery tours and wine tastings. It produces Muscat du Cap Corse with AOC status and AOP Patrimonio wines. The winery represents the sixth generation of family winemaking in Barbaggio.
