Nature
The plateau stretches across Quenza and the municipalities of Zicavo, Aullène and Serra di Scopamena. It is characterised by high-altitude pozzines, wet meadows fed by snowmelt and natural springs. Quenza is crossed by numerous waterways and hiking trails. The endemic Corsican deer, which had disappeared from Corsica in 1969, was reintroduced into the wild from 1998 onwards through several releases.
Culture
Quenza still has fortified houses and watchtowers dating from the 16th century as evidence of its feudal past. The Church of Saint George, which can be visited in Quenza, also dates from the 16th century. The Romanesque Chapel of Santa Maria can be visited on the outskirts of Quenza, on the road towards Ajaccio.
When arriving from Porto-Vecchio, a castle in the Tuscan style can be found in Quenza. Part of the castle park in the centre of the village is dedicated to a permanent exhibition of contemporary sculptures.
Santa Maria Assunta, also known as Chapelle de l’An Mil, is a Romanesque chapel with frescoes in its apse. The chapel is part of the Itinera Romanica discovery route for Romanesque buildings.
Things to do
The signposted Quenza–Serra di Scopamena–Sorbollano hiking route is marked in orange, is of moderate difficulty, is 11.3 kilometres long and takes around four hours. It offers ridge sections, panoramic views, a Romanesque chapel, a water mill and mountain shepherds’ huts.
Da ribba a ricciati is an interpretive trail in Quenza. The trail leads to the Chapelle de l’An Mil and the hidden treasures of the Church of San Ghjorghjiu. It also includes a stop at a botanical garden where various endemic plants of the area are presented.
Local character
Local livestock farmers and producers in Quenza maintain the production of cured meats and honey flavoured with chestnut blossom and maquis.
