Soccia is built amphitheatrically on a mountain ridge and lies in a natural landscape that forms a cirque valley around the small Izzola Valley. The municipality’s territory is suitable for pastoral farming and includes extensive mountain pastures bordering Niolu.
Nature
The landscape includes Lac de Creno, the lowest-lying lake in Corsica and also the only lake in Corsica situated in a wooded landscape. In its surroundings, damp meadows in a forest of Corsican black pines are home to the rare and protected round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).
Those who choose Soccia as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.
Culture
The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Soccia houses an altarpiece created in 1872 entitled “The Virgin and Child”, after Raphael. The work is listed as a historic monument. The Sainte Marie parish church has a bell tower with a lantern.
The Strada Antica is also part of the history of the village: it once connected Soccia with Corte and was an important transhumance route. The route led from the mouth of the Liamone through central Corsica, ran along the Tavignanu Valley and passed through Pastricciola. In the area around Soccia, the pilgrimage to Saint Elisée traditionally takes place on 29 August.
Activities
The hiking trail to Lac de Creno begins at a monumental cross above the village of Soccia. There is a large car park at the starting point of the hiking trail.
A canyoning descent in Zoïcu Canyon includes jumps, natural slides, a zip line and rappelling. Zoïcu Canyon is offered in a sporty version and a family version. Swimming in the river is also possible in the Soccia area.
