Nature and trails

The themed hiking trail in Giuncheto begins in the village and leads through the Corsican maquis between olive groves and chestnut forests. The hiking trail runs through dense Corsican maquis. At the start of the trail, a small ruin recalls the municipality’s winemaking past.

Giuncheto lies at an altitude of around 400 metres on a hill covered with olive trees and oaks. From Punta di Pitone, at an altitude of 577 metres, there are views of the village of Giuncheto, the Ortolu Valley and Mount Cagna. The natural climbing site of Ghjunchetto, also known as Giuncheto, in Corse-du-Sud is classified as a “Terrain d’aventure” climbing area.

History and architectural heritage

The Giuncheto area is demonstrably known to have been inhabited as early as prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, Giuncheto developed into a dispersed settlement associated with pastoral ways of life. Around 1412, the lands were given to the Camaldolese monks of Monte-Cristo, who built a monastery and agricultural buildings there.

The granite houses of Giuncheto are considered typical of the region. In the Saint-Antoine district stands a granite church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It occupies a dominant position and offers a viewpoint over the Ortolo Valley.
