Ajaccio: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Ajaccio combines prominent evidence of the city’s history with art collections and an impressive coastal landscape. The Maison Bonaparte is the family home where Napoleon was born on 15 August 1769; initially classified as a historic monument, it became a national museum in 1967. The Palais Fesch houses one of the most significant collections of Italian painting in French museums. It includes works from the Italian Early Renaissance as well as Roman and Neapolitan Baroque painting, along with Flemish landscapes, genre scenes and still lifes, a Napoleonic collection and a collection of Corsican painting. The Citadelle Miollis is a Genoese fortress built from 1492 onwards to protect the city and its harbour.

Culture

The Notre Dame de l’Assomption Cathedral was built between 1583 and 1593 and illustrates the religious architecture of the Counter-Reformation. Its distinctive façade is ochre-coloured, the floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and a dome rises above the old town. The cathedral also contains the marble baptismal font in which Napoleon Bonaparte was baptised. On 18 March, a mass and celebrations in honour of the Madunnuccia take place there, continuing a tradition deeply rooted in the local culture.

The Chapelle impériale forms the right wing of the Palais Fesch and is protected as a historic monument. Some members of the Bonaparte family are buried in its crypt, including Napoleon’s father and mother as well as Cardinal Fesch.

Nature

The Sentier des Crêtes begins at the Bois des Anglais in Ajaccio and ends at the Route des Sanguinaires in Ajaccio. The easy hiking trail is 10.6 kilometres long and follows the coast from the city centre towards the heights of the Îles Sanguinaires. It offers exceptional views of the coast and sweeping vistas from a balcony high above the sea; it also provides an opportunity to discover the botany of nature at medium mountain altitude.

The Sentier des Douaniers connects the well-known Sanguinaires area with Saint-Antoine beach farther to the north. Along this trail, a prominent rock is used as a climbing school.

The Domaine des Milelli in Ajaccio is a public garden and a popular place for walks. The Domaine also contains a centuries-old olive grove in the hills above Ajaccio.

The gourmet hall of Ajaccio’s market includes fish stalls supplied by local fishermen. It offers on-site dining and tastings.
