Culture and History

North of Torgia lies the Chapel of San Fruttuoso. It has Romanesque origins and was rebuilt using original materials. Its holy water font is shaped like a capital.

The oil mill of Torgia operated with a horizontal water wheel in the basement, a millstone mechanism and a press on the ground floor. The water-supply bridge of Marcuggio, which supplied the oil mill, is still visible.

The church in Cardo is dedicated to Saint Vitus. The Church of Saint Vitus in Cardo-Torgia dates from 1859 and replaced an older parish church that was too far away.

In Cardo-Torgia, 35 grain threshing floors bear witness to the importance of grain cultivation at the end of the 19th century. The hamlet of u Cardu has several old granite houses, while Turghjà is a remote hamlet with seven typical houses.

The Genoese tower in Torgia has been restored and converted into an unusual holiday accommodation. East of Cardo-Torgia lies the archaeological site of Casteddu d’Urbìcchini, which is one of the significant archaeological sites in the area.

The Feast of Saint Vitus in Cardo is held on 15 June. The Feast of San Fritosa in Torgia is held on 21 January.

Getting There

From Porticcio, Cardo can be reached in approximately 35 minutes via the D55, the T40 towards Cauro, the D83 towards Sainte-Marie-Siché, and the D2/D2B to Cardo.
