Bourges Cathedral of Saint-Étienne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral’s tympanum, sculptures and stained-glass windows are particularly impressive; the crypt and tower can also be visited.
Culture and History
The Palais Jacques-Cœur is a particularly successful example of medieval urban private architecture. The palace can be explored independently or with a guided tour. The Hôtel Lallemant was built for the Lallemant family at the end of the 15th century and remodelled in an Italianate style in 1506.
The city’s cultural landscape also includes the Musée Estève in the Hôtel des Echevins, dedicated to the work of the painter Maurice Estève, as well as the Musée du Berry with its collections of sculptures, paintings, artefacts and archives.
Museums
The Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de Bourges offers permanent exhibitions on science and nature across 2,000 m². It also presents three to four temporary exhibitions every year. The Musée des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France is the only museum devoted entirely to the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France. On display are masterpieces, tools, archives, photographs and objects specially made for the museum by the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France.
The Maison des Musées is open to tourists. It offers workshops, conferences, debates and collection presentations to introduce visitors to the museums of Bourges in a different way.
Nature
The Marais de l’Yèvre et de la Voiselle is a classified natural site. The Marais de Bourges comprises 135 hectares of cultivated plots. Les Prés-Fichaux has been awarded the designation Remarkable Garden.
Orientation
The main walking tour for exploring Bourges follows the route of the Gallo-Roman city wall and includes 53 information panels. Bourges is part of the national network “Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire”.
Events
Printemps de Bourges Crédit Mutuel opens the festival season. The festival brings together established artists, emerging talents and original creations from the French and international music scene.
Les Nuits Lumière offers a free, self-guided walking tour through the historic centre of Bourges from nightfall.
