Saint-Jeanvrin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Église Saint-Georges has a three-bay nave without side aisles, a double transept, a semicircular sanctuary and a pointed barrel vault.

Culture

The window of the central apse preserves a significant remnant of 15th-century glazing. By decree of 8 July 1911, the church was classified as a historic monument.

The castle of Saint-Jeanvrin was probably built by the Chauvigny family in the 15th century and largely destroyed during the Wars of Religion between 1589 and 1591. It survives only as a ruin. Entry to the castle grounds is prohibited; the ruins are privately owned.

On the upper floor of the town hall, the Musée Michel Langlois displays more than 900 old tools. The collection illustrates historic crafts such as wheelwrighting, glazier work, clog making, stone masonry and long-timber sawing.

Nature

Saint-Jeanvrin is bordered to the northeast by the Grand Etang and the Petit Etang; the two ponds were created in the 13th century by the lords of Saint-Jeanvrin. The bocage landscape, with its hedgerows and scattered woodland, preserves traces of winegrowing, particularly in the south.

The Les Étangs de Saint-Jeanvrin site covers 33 hectares, including 25 hectares of water across two ponds. The large fishing pond has 17 hectares of water and 4 hectares of reed beds. At Les Étangs de Saint-Jeanvrin, carp fishing is permitted during the day and at night.

Trails

The Voie de Vézelay passes through Les Archers to Saint-Jeanvrin, passing the church there before continuing towards Le Pied du Montet. On the GR 654, Saint-Jeanvrin is listed as one of the typical villages of southern Berry between Le Châtelet, Châteaumeillant and La Châtre.

The Les Blancheforts route is classified as easy and covers 10.5 km, with a duration of around 2 hours and 30 minutes. It starts at the picturesque ruins of the castle of the lords of Blancheforts and leads along paths to a preserved washhouse and a Romanesque church. The route is designated for hiking and mountain biking.
