Montigny: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Montigny presents its history particularly vividly in the Église Saint Martial. Above the baptismal font is a painting donated by Cardinal de la Rochefoucauld in 1736, depicting the baptism of Jesus and restored in 2016. In 1626, the church housed Blessed Marguerite d’Arbouze, abbess of Val de Grâce and founder of the Mont-de-Piété de la Charité sur Loire. On her way to Sévry, she stopped in Montigny, stayed overnight there and attended Mass the following day.

Culture and History

The chapel of the Église Saint Martial also reaches far back into history: it appears to date from the late 16th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Montigny was a seigneurial estate owned by François de La Grange.

Le château de la Charnaye is a hunting lodge dating from 1830. Jeanne Hugo, a granddaughter of Victor Hugo, lived there from 1906 to 1914. The hamlet of BOITEAU is older than the municipality; traces of Gallic settlement can be found there. The Voie Romaine Bourges Saint-Thibault also runs through Montigny.

Folk art and craftsmanship are associated with the Maison du Forgeron. When visited accompanied by the Brion sisters, it is a small museum of folk art and popular traditions. The forge at the Maison du Forgeron was built by Henri Millereux in 1871 and operated until the 1950s. During the Heritage Days, the Maison du Forgeron opened annually; the wooden, brown-painted gate was opened and smoke rose from the chimney.

Nature and Trails

Behind the church is the 12th-century Fontaine. It contains a spring from which a small stream emerges. The Romanesque Fontaine was renovated in 1790 and 1997. It can be reached via the path starting on the left-hand side of the church; it is about 150 paces away.

Route no. 16, “Montigny, Poulasnon”, is a 17.8 km circular trail in the “Autour du patrimoine” hiking collection.

Wine

Cécile and Henry Natter founded the Domaine Natter winery in Montigny in 1974. It is located on the southwestern edge of the Sancerre appellation. Domaine Natter produces AOC Sancerre wines and offers direct sales from the estate.
