Coast and Nature

Kerver Beach is the largest beach in Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys. On the seaside, the GR®34 runs along the cliffs of Grand Mont in Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys.

Club nautique du Rohu is a French sailing school that welcomes children and adults, as well as beginners and advanced sailors, at Goh Velin Beach. All year round, the club offers equipment rental and private lessons in windsurfing, catamaran sailing, dinghy sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and wing foiling, as well as rental and private lessons with J80 day boats. Supervised swimming is available at Goh Velin Beach.

Golf Rhuys Kerver has an 18-hole seaside course in the Bretagne Sud–Golfe du Morbihan ornithological reserve, where herons and egrets can be found.

Culture and History

Saint-Gildas Abbey Church was built in the 6th century by the monk Gildas, who came from Scotland, at the request of the Count of Vannes. In the 11th century, it was rebuilt several times by a group of monks from Fleury Abbey; its choir is Romanesque. Pierre Abélard is regarded as a famous resident in connection with the Église Saint-Gildas.

Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys’s small cultural heritage includes 60 fountains and 14 crosses. Many date the Tour Prison to the 16th century. The Bouquinerie de la Tour Prison is located between the abbey church and the Tour Prison and opens onto a garden with old books, engravings and drawings that invites visitors to read.

The Les Étangs circular route includes a detour to the Musée des arts, métiers et commerces. The Dolmen de Port-aux-Moine is freely accessible in Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys, as is the Menhir de Kercambre. Interpretive signage was installed for the Dolmen de Port aux Moines in Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys on a Tuesday, 13 May, accompanying the visit to accessible megalithic sites.

Harbour

Port aux Moines was once a natural shelter in a cleft in the rocks used by the monks of the abbey; it still exists in the current harbour today. The present-day Port aux Moines has space for 117 boats.
