Pontivy combines imperial history with distinctive waterways. This historic character is particularly evident in the Napoleonic Quarter, where the Imperial Church of Saint-Joseph stands at the centre of a park. It was a gift from Emperor Napoleon III after his visit to Napoléonville in August 1858.

Culture and History

Saint-Joseph Church was built between 1860 and 1867 according to plans by Parisian architect Marcellin-Emmanuel Varcollier. Contemporary stained-glass windows were added between 1991 and 1994. Pontivy’s Imperial Quarter itself was built under Napoleon.

The Château de Pontivy is also part of the historic townscape. Due to ongoing renovation work, it is not open to the public all year round. During the school holidays, guided tours are offered there by the Office de Tourisme de Pontivy Communauté; a reservation is required.

Another link to the history of the waterways is the Péniche Duchesse Anne. It was launched on 21 November 1929 and had previously been used as a cargo vessel under the name Idéal.
