Château de Vitré stands on a slate spur overlooking the Vilaine and Vitré’s historic centre. The medieval fortifications feature a drawbridge, loopholes, machicolations and gun ports.

Culture

Visitors can walk along the ramparts of Château de Vitré and enjoy panoramic views over the town. Since 1877, it has housed the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de la Ville. In ten exhibition rooms, it presents the history of Vitré from the Middle Ages to the present day; a digital model also shows the architectural development of Château de Vitré.

Église Notre-Dame de Vitré is a Gothic church. Robert I founded it around 1060, before it was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. Frescoes, vaults and side chapels are among the features visible there.

Gardens and Trails

Jardin du Parc is a seven-hectare English-style garden with more than 50 plant species. It includes areas for walking, relaxing and playing for children.

From Pré des Lavandières, you can walk along the Vilaine Valley below the château and the town walls. The Circuit du Pré des Lavandières circular route no. 30 offers several options from 1 to 3 km and can be continued eastwards along the Vilaine and the GR 34.

Cycling and Rail

The 35-km Fougères–Vitré cycling stage of La Régalante ends in Vitré. Gare de Vitré is served daily by TGV trains between Paris Montparnasse and Rennes, as well as by TER trains. The journey from the station to Château de Vitré is indicated as taking five minutes on foot, four minutes by bus route B or two minutes by bicycle.
