Les Iffs combines impressive evidence of Breton history with circular walking routes that closely connect culture and landscape. Around the Château de Montmuran, the Église Saint-Ouen and several themed trails, a multifaceted picture of the village emerges.
Culture and History
The Gothic Église Saint-Ouen dates from the 15th century and has a cruciform layout, four chapels and stained-glass windows from the 16th century. An audio guide accessible via a QR code at the entrance explains the treasures inside the church. The Château de Montmuran is also connected to the history of Les Iffs: Bertrand du Guesclin was knighted in 1354 in the chapel built onto the gatehouse. Groups can visit the Château de Montmuran year-round by prior appointment.
Other noteworthy historical features include the Fontaine Saint-Fiacre. It is made entirely of hewn stone, crowned by a granite cross and considered the only covered fountain in the département. A former weaver’s house from the 16th to 17th century, built from limestone from Le Quiou and bricks, is classified as a Monument historique.
Circular Routes and Discoveries
The Circuit de Montmuran starts in Les Iffs and is signposted as an easy 6.9-kilometre hike. Its route follows wooded paths with beautiful panoramas and a rich cultural heritage. In addition, the Circuit Lin et Chanvre in Les Iffs features eight interactive stations with QR-code mini-games and content about the history of flax and hemp.
The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle on the Circuit Duguesclin. The circular cycle route passes through Les Iffs and connects the commune with La Baussaine, Trimer, Tinténiac, Bazouges-sous-Hédé, Hédé, Saint Symphorien and Saint-Brieuc-des-Iffs. Another activity offered in Les Iffs is the geocaching route “Le calvaire des Iffs”.
