Grand-Fougeray: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Grand-Fougeray preserves a striking witness to its history in the Tour Duguesclin. In 1350, Bertrand Duguesclin recaptured the Château de Grand-Fougeray after he and his companions had disguised themselves as woodcutters. The Tour Duguesclin is the 30-metre-high keep that remains of the Château de Grand-Fougeray. Today, it is considered a historic site and a listed historic monument with the status “classé ou inscrit (CNMHS)”.

Culture and History

In the village centre, the Circuit découverte presents Grand-Fougeray’s cultural heritage on a walk featuring 10 information panels. Another historical trail leads to Ballac Abbey in the Vallée de la Chère: it was built in the 12th century by monks from Redon.

Nature

The Parc de la Tour Du Guesclin is a 7-hectare park containing the tower and the remains of the château. The Fête Médiévale takes place around the Tour Duguesclin. The tower is set in a wooded park of around 7 hectares surrounding a pond.

The Vallée de la Chère is a green, rolling valley. It is crossed by the small Chère River before it flows into the Vilaine. The Boucle vélo de Grand-Fougeray No. 8 takes you through a landscape of cultivated fields, meadows and heathland.

Things to Do

The Circuit la Brûlonnais is an easy 5-kilometre route for walking or cycling. It starts at the car park of the Parc de la Tour Duguesclin. Another way to explore the area is the Balade sonore: this audio-guide experience combines stories and memories from local residents. The Grand-Fougeray treasure hunt takes an average of 1 to 1.5 hours.
