Le Vivier-Sur-Mer: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At the port of Le Vivier-sur-Mer stands La Maison de la Baie, close to the bay’s mussel-farming activities. Its free permanent exhibition provides information about AOP-certified mussel farming as well as the bay’s flora and fauna.

Nature and the Bay

La Maison de la Baie regularly organises walks to discover the bay and its landscapes, the Hermelles reef, as well as birds and seals. Trips on the Mytili-Mobile provide insights into oyster farming, mussel farming and traditional fishing installations in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Mussel Farming and Local Tradition

The Le Vivier-sur-Mer/Cherrueix mussel-farming port is one of France’s most important centres for cultivating Bouchot mussels. It is also a rare inland port where boats equipped with wheels are used. The bay’s mussels received protected designation of origin (AOP) status in 2011.

Townscape and History

Le Vivier-sur-Mer is a linear village that stretches as a suburb along the dyke on both sides of the church. The Church of Saint Nicholas dates from 1839 to 1848, was designed by the architect Frangeul and is one of the last churches in the Ille-et-Vilaine département to be designed entirely in the classical tradition.

At the exit of Le Vivier-sur-Mer towards Cherrueix, the Pont d'Angoulême connects four waterways and regulates them at the same time.

Paths and Waterways

The Circuit du Bec à l'Âne is a 20 km route starting in Le Vivier-sur-Mer. It allows visitors to explore the waterways of the Marais de Dol and the regulation of drainage from fresh water to the sea. A variant of the GR®34 coastal footpath passes through Cherrueix and rejoins the GR®34 between Le Vivier-sur-Mer and Hirel.

Cycling

The Vélomaritime includes a 29 km stage from Le Vivier-sur-Mer to Mont-Saint-Michel and is signposted in both directions. The Vélomaritime section in the Ille-et-Vilaine département alternates between greenways, cycle paths and shared minor roads.
