Gaël: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gaël combines preserved Romanesque architecture, historic chapels, and designated trails. Of the original Église Saint-Pierre, the 11th-century Romanesque nave and the sacristy have been preserved. The choir contains woodwork from the 17th or 18th century.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Nicodème dates back to a former Romanesque brotherhood chapel. It was rebuilt in 1620, remodelled and extended again in 1712. The church contains a Pietà as well as statues of Saint Margaret, Saint Joseph, Saint Nicodemus, and Saint Anne.

The present-day Chapelle du Louya has the ground plan of a Latin cross oriented towards the east. It is considered to have been a hostel dedicated to Saint James, where pilgrims and travellers were accommodated. Renovation work that began in 1998 uncovered the original altar again and highlighted the red slate steps.

The designated ancient sites Le Chêne de Guillotin, Tombeau de Merlin, La fontaine de Jouvence, and La Fontaine de Barenton are located in the area around Gaël.

Things to Do

The Circuit de Gaël No. 166 is a 45-minute walking route and starts at the church square in Gaël. The Vélo Promenade® – Boucle de la vallée du Meu is listed as taking 3 hours and 40 minutes and starts at the Place du Monument in Gaël.
