Montours: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Voie des Plantagenêt, one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, passes through Montours; it forms part of the second stage from Saint-James to Fougères, covering 32.1 km.

Trails and Landscape

The Ruisseau des Échelles, a tributary of the Loisance, flows through Montours and forms a valley that connects various natural areas of the region.

The Terre Rouge circular trail is lined with remarkable calvaries and granite crosses. The Du haut des Echelles de Montours hiking trail passes the Chapelle Saint-Gorgon de Monthoux, which is dedicated to Saint Gorgon. According to local tradition, the chapel is associated with the healing of eye ailments.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Martin in Montours dates from the 19th century. Older remains have been preserved in the church.

The former 18th-century presbytery, now the town hall, contains remarkable elements of religious art.

In Valaine, a medieval motte remains on the site of the former castle, which was destroyed between 1600 and 1630. The Chapelle Sainte-Anne in Valaine has a remarkable Romanesque portal.

The Chapelle Saint-Gorgon de Monthoux dates from 1876.

The donation of property by Raoul II de Fougères in 1151 contributed to the foundation of the priory of Montours. The Montours area had been connected with Rillé Abbey in Fougères since the 12th century.

Orientation

The Belvédère du Tertre offers a viewpoint over the surrounding landscapes of the Coglais and has an orientation table. Montours also has a stopover accommodation facility on the Way of St. James.
