Vieux-Viel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The present-day Church of Saint-Martin-de-Tours was built in 1854; an older Gothic window was reused on the north side of the choir. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The building also features a false barrel vault, a bell-tower porch, and a polygonally chamfered chancel with a skylight niche.

Culture and History

The Pierre Fichée menhir is a 2 m-high granite menhir. According to local legend, the Devil dropped it while carrying materials in his sack for the construction of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The oldest cross in Vieux-Viel is a granite cross dating from 1554; it is said to have been erected by a member of the Bouyer family. The Château du Châtelier, also known as Chastellier, is privately owned and cannot be visited.

Historic Earthworks

The Motte Bertier is an earthwork mound approximately 25 m in diameter and about 4 m high, which was dependent on the lordship of Motte-Bertier. A nearby stream suggests that the motte was surrounded by a water-filled ditch.

The Motte de Tréet or Tréhel is an earthwork mound approximately 30 m in diameter and 5 m high, which presumably served to guard a former mill. It is still surrounded by a ditch that was formerly filled with water from the nearby stream.

Local Production

Pressoir de Henwiel is a cider house located in Vieux-Viel in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, with 9.5 hectares of organically farmed orchards; cider and apple juice, among other products, are made on site. Visits and tastings are available year-round by prior reservation.
