Chavagne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Chavagne, nature observation, physical activity and remarkable evidence of the town’s history are closely intertwined. This is particularly evident at Bois de la Sillandais: the approximately 20-hectare ecologically significant natural area offers opportunities to observe animals and plants. Numerous ponds, pools and flooded ditches in Bois de la Sillandais and along its edges also provide highly favourable conditions for amphibian reproduction.

Activities

The “Circuit Entre Sillandais et Fontenelles” circular trail is 11.4 kilometres long; a variant measures 7.8 kilometres. The estimated walking time is 3 hours 30 minutes for the longer route and 2 hours 30 minutes for the variant. The circular trail starts at the St-Éxupéry car park and is accessible to all visitor groups.

Another option is the CRAPA, which can be reached via the car park at Étang de la Sillandais. The route is 1,800 metres long and includes 12 activity stations. The CRAPA around Étang de la Sillandais is suitable for running and relaxing walks and features stations for physical exercises.

The “Sentier pédagogique” leads into Bois de la Sillandais and introduces visitors to its numerous living organisms, as well as their different forms and ways of life. The Vallée de la Vilaine cycle network also passes through Chavagne: marked routes run through the town, and the network extends over more than 125 kilometres of roads and trails.

Nature

On the “Balade à Roulettes® – Le Bois de la Sillandais”, the path is firm, wide, well marked and well equipped; the gradient is only slight. The site also includes a playground for younger children.

Culture and History

The original residential building of Manoir de la Touche dates from the late 15th century. Dendrochronological analysis dated the timber structure to the autumn and winter of 1495–1496, and the ceiling to 1522. The Église paroissiale Saint-Martin was built between 1864 and 1869; the upper part of the bell tower dates from 1874, and the church is designed in the Neo-Gothic style.

Chapelle Saint-Nicolas is a Romanesque cemetery chapel dating from the second half of the 19th century. It was built in memory of Chavagne’s former parish church. The grounds of Château de la Sillandais also contain a dovecote with a lantern and a chapel; the entire ensemble is surrounded by moats.

Local Life

La Fabrique in Chavagne sells traditionally made Breton baked goods in its shop, including Galettes bretonnes, Palets bretons, Financiers and Brioches. Radis Rouge sells farm produce at the Les Petits Chapelais farm in Chavagne, including sourdough bread, meat, seasonal vegetables, dairy products, flour and milk, as well as other local food products.
