La Roche aux Fées in Essé is a covered passage grave made of purple shale slabs. It belongs to a type of tomb that was widespread in the 3rd millennium BC, around 5,000 years ago. At the winter solstice on 21 December, the first ray of sunlight rises opposite the entrance to La Roche aux Fées. The tomb is freely accessible all year round; guided tours of La Roche aux Fées are available on request throughout the year. The “Roche aux Fées” app offers families an experience discovering the lives of Neolithic ancestors.

Culture

The oldest written records of the Notre-Dame church in Essé date back to the 11th century. Its Romanesque elements include the first courses of stone in the nave and chancel end, an arrow-slit window on the west side and flat buttresses. A 17th-century rosary painting depicting the Marquise de Sévigné decorates the nave of Notre-Dame church in Essé.

The Moulin de la Lande was built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The chapel on Rue de la Croix Rabault dates from the second half of the 19th century and was restored in 1988.

Hiking

The Circuit de la chapelle starts at the church car park in Essé. The easy walking route is 4.5 km long and takes around one hour; 80% of its route follows asphalt. At the Circuit de la chapelle, the outdoor fitness area has 10 pieces of exercise equipment. Several pieces of equipment there are accessible to people with disabilities, and the outdoor fitness area also includes a course for children and teenagers.

The “Essé – Verte campagne” hiking route is easy, 7.8 km long and takes around two hours. It leads through the countryside around Essé from village to village.
