Culture

The history of Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon includes the Église Saint-Marc. It is of Romanesque origin, was rebuilt in the 14th century and partially reconstructed in 1517. The church houses nineteen classified or registered works of art, including a 15th-century limestone Madonna and Child. According to tradition, Louis IX is said to have stayed there to pray before meeting Pierre de Dreux.

The Chapelle Saint-Martin also preserves historical evidence: it houses a granite altar and a wooden statue of Saint Martin of Beaumont from the former chapel. The site of the Chapelle Saint-Martin was formerly occupied by a pilgrimage chapel visited by pilgrims seeking relief from shivering fever.

The remains of the former 16th-century Château de Saint-Mard can be found in the historic town centre. Southwest of the Église Saint-Marc stands a remarkable old house with a round-arched portal featuring a double arch and old half-timbering; it is an example of 16th- or 17th-century architecture.

Landscape

From Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon to Vieux-Vy-sur-Couesnon, the narrow Couesnon Valley passes through a uniform landscape. On one side, it gradually develops into the Coglais and, on the other, into the Collines de Saint-Aubin-d’Aubigné.

Hiking and Water

The “Sur les hauts de Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon” hike is an easy 6.64 km circular route with an average duration of 2 hours and 5 minutes. It follows the Couesnon and then heads back towards the town centre.

Today, the Couesnon is navigable from Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon to the Barrage de Beauvoir in front of Mont-Saint-Michel. From Rimou, a several-hour canoe trip with boat hire is available.
