Clayes is home to the Château de Clayes-Palys, a building whose present form dates back to the period between 1750 and 1765: it was built on the site of an earlier manor house.

Culture and history

The vestibule of the Château de Clayes-Palys houses Falconet’s sculpture “L’Amour vainqueur”, commissioned by Louis XV for Madame de Pompadour. The château is listed as a historic monument; its park and surroundings are also a classified site. The Château de Clayes-Palys is privately owned and not open to visitors, but it can still be seen from public areas.

The parish church of Saint-Pierre is mentioned as early as 1122 in the cartulary of Saint-Melaine Abbey in Rennes. The present church has a Latin-cross floor plan. It was extended in 1888 under Arthur Regnault, with two chapels added to form a transept.

The cemetery cross stands on three steps; its square base transitions into an octagonal shape. Its western arm depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and two other figures. There is a public chapel in Clayes. The chapel on Place de l’Eglise dates from the last quarter of the 19th century and is attributed to Arthur Regnault. A door from the second half of the 15th century was reused in its façade.

Landscape and trails

The traditional settlement structure of Clayes is predominantly characterized by scattered, detached residential buildings throughout the municipality.

The Rabine is a large avenue lined with oak trees that led to the Château de Clayes. The “Balade à Clayes par la Rabine” is a very easy, 4.2-kilometre walking route lasting around one hour, marked in yellow and suitable for pushchairs. The circular route takes in the Manoir de La Rivière and the Château de Clayes; the Manoir de La Rivière is considered an ancillary building of the château.

Clayes can be reached by public transport via route 81.
