Châteauneuf-D'ille-Et-Vilaine: Holiday apartments and holiday houses

Châteauneuf-d’Ille-et-Vilaine reveals its history particularly clearly through a fortified complex: the Château de Châteauneuf-d’Ille-et-Vilaine is a former defensive fortress of the Clos-Poulet. The complex was built around the year 1000 and is considered an important example in Brittany of the continuous development of large fortresses.

Culture and history

The Château complex includes the Petit Château, which is known as a Malouinière. It was built by the de Rieux family in the first half of the 17th century, probably around 1620. The Église paroissiale Saint-Nicolas also preserves traces from various periods: in the nave, at the portal and at the southern window, surviving traces from the 1400s can be seen. Two side chapels were added to its cruciform layout in the 17th century.

Wetlands and nature

The landscape includes the Marais de Châteauneuf, which covers 51.26 hectares. A larger natural area is the Marais Noir de Saint-Coulban: the 550-hectare marshland has significant animal and plant biodiversity and extends across six municipalities, including Châteauneuf-d’Ille-et-Vilaine.

The Marais Noir de Saint-Coulban is not freely accessible. However, a public event on seasonal topics takes place in the marshland every month.
