Saint-Renan: Holiday apartments and houses

Saint-Renan is a medieval town and was once a European tin capital.

History

The town trail takes around 45 minutes and is 2 km long. 13 enamelled lava-stone panels illustrate the town’s history – from the legend of Saint Ronan to the memory of the Sénéchaussée.

The Musée du Ponant is located in the centre of Saint-Renan at 16 Rue Saint-Mathieu, above Place du Vieux Marché. The building housing the museum dates from 1782; the corresponding year is carved above the entrance. An exceptional Gallic stele welcomes visitors at the entrance. At the Musée du Ponant, an exhibition presents the 15-year history of COMIREN, which made Saint-Renan the tin capital.

La Prairie bleue is an exhibition area with information panels about the historic tin mining that created five lakes and profoundly changed the landscape of the municipality of Saint-Renan.

Culture

The Jardin de la Coulée Verte is open to walkers and provides a safe, fully accessible pedestrian link between the car parks, the media library and the services in the town centre. Exhibitions are held in the Jardin de la Coulée Verte. The garden has hosted cultural events, including the tenth edition of the Festival médiéval de Saint Renan, an exhibition about Breton games and an open-air exhibition by the sculptor Mich Mao.

Trails

After the tin deposit was exhausted, seven lakes remained in Saint-Renan. Official walking and cycling routes pass through Saint-Renan; they are maintained and signposted by the technical services of Pays d'Iroise Communauté. The shores of Lac de Ty Colo and Lac de la Comiren in the centre of Saint-Renan have been developed for walkers.

On the Circuit des lacs, visitors can see a fountain, the Grand Lavoir and the lakes of Saint-Renan, as well as discover the Chapelle des Voleurs. The Circuit des lacs passes through a large part of the valley that the Compagnie minière de Saint-Renan exploited for tin between 1960 and 1975. The Grand Lavoir consists of two springs and seven basins, including four washing basins and three rinsing basins. It can be reached from the town centre via Rue Saint-Yves; access for people with reduced mobility is on the left-hand side.

The Circuit vélo Al Lenn (loop 2) is a challenging 18.5 km cycle route with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes through Saint-Renan. For the Circuit des lacs, parking is available at the Lac de Ty-Colo car park in 29290 Saint-Renan, near the athletics stadium.

Market and water

A market is held in the town centre of Saint-Renan every Saturday throughout the year from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cable wakeboarding takes place at Lac de Ty Colo: the wakeboard is pulled by a cable. The lake’s waters were the first in Brittany to host this sport.
