From a rocky outcrop, the Château de Roc’h Morvan towers over the Élorn valley. La Roche-Maurice combines this striking landscape feature with buildings and archaeological sites that reveal different historical periods.

History

The Château de la Roche Maurice was built in the 11th century by Morvan, the Viscount of Cornouaille. The present-day Saint-Yves Church was built in the 16th and 17th centuries on the site of a medieval castle chapel. An even older religious history is told by the Chapelle de Pont-Christ: it was built in 1533 by Guille de Brézal and Marguerite Sénéchal and dedicated to Notre-Dame de Bon Secours.

The church houses the Passion window, created in 1539. It covers 21.05 m² and is considered the second-largest stained-glass window in Brittany.

The Gallo-Roman past includes the site of the Villa of Valy-Cloître in La Roche-Maurice. In 1970, Gallo-Roman remains of brick and rubble masonry were discovered there during agricultural work. These remains were connected by a Celtic route that crossed the Élorn at Pont-Christ.

Trails and landscape

The Sentier du Morbic is a circular trail suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. It includes a viewpoint overlooking the confluence of the Élorn and Morbic and passes the ruins of the Moulin de Ligoulven. Another loop is the Sentier de Kermare.

Sightseeing

The Maison du patrimoine de La Roche-Maurice offers an interactive visit covering the history of the château, with insights into underground areas and objects found in the château.

Tours of the parish district of La Roche-Maurice are organised year-round by the APEVE association by prior reservation.
