Nature

Along the shores of Île de Batz are dunes, sandy beaches, rocky coasts, heathland and wetlands. The island has around twenty beaches, including several facing south; there are also beaches sheltered from the wind.

A special botanical attraction is the Jardin Georges Delaselle, an exotic island garden with more than 2,000 exotic plant species. It was established in 1897 and contains more than 1,700 species from all continents. More than two-thirds of its collection comes from the Southern Hemisphere.

Culture and History

The Phare de l'île de Batz is a 44-metre-high tower. Its construction began in 1834 and took three years; the lighthouse was commissioned in 1836. Climbing the 198 steps provides views over the island and the channel. The panorama stretches from the Sept-Îles to Île-Vierge and includes the entrance to the Baie de Morlaix and the Monts d'Arrée.

The Phare de l'île de Batz is listed as a Monument historique and fully classified; protective designations are recorded for 2015 and 2017. The ruins of the Chapelle Ste Anne have been classified as a Monument historique since 1980. Every year on the last Sunday in July, a procession takes place there, with an open-air Mass and a dune fire.

Paths and Coastline

Île de Batz can be explored on foot and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long from east to west. Shorter routes across the island allow for walks of approximately 7 to 8 kilometres. Numerous paths allow cyclists to reach the coast away from the coastal path, which is reserved exclusively for pedestrians.

The Anse de Pors Kernoc serves as an anchorage for Île de Batz's fishing fleet.

Agriculture

Agriculture strongly shapes the landscape of Île de Batz: around twenty farms share 160 hectares of cultivated land. Traditional crops include early potatoes and cauliflower. Fertilising with seaweed also remains an agricultural practice on Île de Batz.
