Oyster farming is at the heart of life on the Bélon: Riec-sur-Bélon is best known as an oyster-farming centre, and the famous flat Bélon oyster originated there at the end of the 19th century. Visitors can buy these famous flat Bélon oysters directly from oyster farmers.
Nature
Bocage valleys and footpaths lead to the river and the sea in Riec-sur-Bélon. There are also around 30 kilometres of signposted and well-maintained coastal and woodland paths.
The picturesque Port du Bélon is dominated by a manor house built between the 15th and 19th centuries and offers uninterrupted views of the ocean.
The Château de Québlen, Raguenes Beach, the beaches of Trévignon, Plage du Kérou, the ruins of Abbaye Saint-Maurice de Carnoët and Plage de Bellangenet are also located in the area around Riec-sur-Bélon.
Culture
The Notre-Dame de Trémor Chapel dates from the 16th century. The covered megalithic gallery of Kerantiec has a 9.5-metre-long chamber, is listed in the inventory of historic monuments and is described as one of the finest surviving examples in Finistère.
Two Gallo-Roman ram heads discovered in Riec-sur-Bélon in 1978 are now on display in the municipality's media library.
The wider region around Riec-sur-Bélon is home to the historic Château de Kerbastic and the historic site of Thieves Tower.
Excursions
The Circuit du Port du Bélon is signposted with yellow and white-and-red GR34, No. 6, markings. The circular route begins at the Riec-sur-Bélon tourist office; the starting point is near the church, and parking is available on Place Yves Loudoux.
Trips are organised on the avens or out at sea, offering views of Château du Hénant and sheltered coves.
