Saint-Cadou combines sacred architectural heritage, traces of slate mining and diverse landscapes with hiking trails in the Monts d’Arrée. The defining features of the area are its ecclesiastical ensemble, the slate quarry landscape, forests and rocks, and the Kalon Menez Are route.

Culture

The Église Saint-Cadou, together with its cross, has been listed as a historic monument in its entirety by a decree dated 31 July 2015. It was initially a simple trévial chapel, became a subsidiary church of Sizun in 1748 and was elevated to a parish church in 1829.

The Calvaire de Saint-Cadou was built for the church cemetery. The Saint-Cadou ensemble comprises a stone wall, a cemetery, the church, a calvary and a south porch; there is no ossuary. Until the middle of the 20th century, Saint-Cadou was also an important centre for the production of rustic slate slabs. The slate slabs extracted there still cover the roofs of chapels and farmhouses in the surrounding area today.

Landscape

The slate quarry landscape of Saint-Cadou includes visible open-pit quarries that are now flooded and surrounded by spoil heaps made of slate waste. These spoil heaps form new landforms in the Monts d’Arrée. The Fontaine Saint-Cadou (Sizun) is located near the slate quarry of the same name and illustrates its influence on the local landscape.

The Forêt de Saint Cadou is a discovery site in the “Bocages & forêts” theme area of the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique. Roc’h An Daol is also located in the heart of the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique.

Hiking

Kalon Menez Are is a 100-kilometre, multi-day hiking route through the Monts d’Arrée. It passes through Sizun–Saint-Cadou and uses sections of the GR®37 and the GR®P des Monts d’Arrée; the route is signposted in both directions.

The Roc’h An Daol hiking trail leads in Saint-Cadou up to the summit of the rock.
