Discover Carhaix-Plouguer: holiday apartment between Vorgium and the Greenways

Carhaix-Plouguer offers an unusual way to explore its past: at the Vorgium Centre for Virtual Archaeological Interpretation, the ancient history of the town, founded 2,000 years ago under the name Vorgium, is presented through archaeological remains and digital technologies.

Culture

The historical highlights include the second underground section of the Vorgium aqueduct. It was 27 km long and was built in the 3rd century AD. The Carhaix section of the aqueduct tour consists of three stretches in the town centre.

La Maison du Sénéchal also offers an insight into the town’s history. The corner house was built in the second third of the 16th century and restored in 1606. It is classified as a historic monument; this classification applies to parts of the building on Rue Auguste Brizeux dating from 1922 and on Rue Félix Faure dating from 1976.

A mobile tour of Taurig takes visitors to seven landmark places from the everyday life of Carhaix’s inhabitants: Saint-Trémeur Church, Vorgium, the hospital, the stadium, the Lapic fountain, the railway station and Château Rouge.

Experiences

In the Vorgium archaeological garden, visitors can use a tablet and augmented reality to explore the streets, shops, baths, private gardens and a public fountain of the ancient city. Vorgium also offers a communal, immersive virtual-reality escape game. The historical scenario challenges participants to save the treasure of the Vorgium aqueduct.

The Breizh Adrénaline adventure park in Carhaix-Plouguer offers 10 courses and 160 stations. These include a 12-metre free fall and two long zip lines: one 400 m long over the river and one 950 m long over the labyrinth.

Carhaix Golf is located in the wooded, hilly valley of the Hyères. It comprises a hilly, wooded 9-hole compact course, a driving range and practice greens.

Food and drink

The Musée Coreff offers an interactive visit with videos about the history of the brewery and an interactive 3D model. This model explains the individual steps involved in producing traditionally brewed beer.

Visits to the Brasserie Coreff include a beer tasting at the bar.

Cycle paths

Voie Verte No. 6 runs from Saint-Méen-Le-Grand via Carhaix and then continues above the Nantes–Brest Canal to Camaret, circling Lac de Guerlédan along the way.

Route 7 runs from Roscoff via Carhaix towards Concarneau. The different starting and ending directions of the two numbered routes offer a clear basis for comparison when planning a route.

Getting there

Carhaix can be reached from Paris via the Paris–Brest TGV line to Guingamp, followed by a TER connection.

Electric charging stations have been installed in front of the Espace Aqualudique Plijadour in Carhaix.
