Landscape and nature

The Anse de Poulsu in Porspoder is a geologically significant area of the Finistère département. The maritime part of Porspoder lies in the transition zone between the Iroise Islands Biosphere Reserve and the Iroise Sea. The maritime part of the municipality of Porspoder belongs to the “Île d'Ouessant et Archipel de-Molène” area. Porspoder also features a diverse mosaic of habitats comprising wetlands, small forests, streams, washhouses, meadows, cultivated plots, dunes and tidal flats.

Coast and trails

The GR34 runs for approximately 8.5 kilometres along the coast of Porspoder and is used by walkers and long-distance hikers. Hiking trails and circular walking routes are available from Porspoder Town Hall. The Presqu’île Saint-Laurent is connected to the mainland by an isthmus near the beaches of La Grève Blanche, des Dames and La Grève des Bateaux; walking around it takes less than an hour. The water at Porspoder’s beaches is tested weekly, and the results are posted at the beach entrances.

Maritime history and culture

The uninhabited Île de Melon contains numerous menhirs and a dolmen and was used for a long time as a granite quarry. The traditional small harbour of Porz Mazou preserves an original mooring method using wooden posts, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. The seaside church of Saint-Budoc dates from the 16th century.
