Brest can be explored through its maritime history and fortifications, exhibitions about the ocean, and natural areas. The Château de Brest is the oldest historic monument in Brest. From the towers, ramparts, and covered way, visitors can enjoy views of the Rade, the harbours, the Penfeld, and the city.

History

The Tour Tanguy was built in the 14th century. It houses 14 dioramas with models that reconstruct Brest as it was before 1939. Admission to the Tour Tanguy is free and does not require a reservation.

The Fort du Questel is a remnant of an 18th-century fortification. The six-hectare site is located within a network of redesigned natural areas and offers opportunities for walks.

The Musée national de la Marine presents a wide variety of works that trace, up to the present day, the maritime history of the great port envisioned by Richelieu.

Ocean

The permanent exhibition 70.8 is divided into three major thematic areas: ocean resources; understanding, measuring, and forecasting the ocean; and the ocean as a space for navigation.

The new Tropical Pavilion at Océanopolis is open to visitors. The Cité des Océanautes at Océanopolis is also open to visitors. Océanolab is located at Océanopolis, has been open to the public since the end of March 2023, and provides visitors with insights into research taking place directly on site.

Nature

Bodonou is a 130-hectare natural area extending across the municipalities of Plouzané, Guilers, and Brest, and is an important biodiversity area in the region. 350 animal species have been recorded in Bodonou, including 175 bird species.

The garden of the Conservatoire botanique national de Brest invites visitors to discover the plant world across 30 hectares.
