Saint-Méen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Saint-Méen combines a rich local history with tranquil landscapes and distinctive traces of the past in the surrounding area. At its heart is one of the seven gardens in the “Terre d’Hortensias” programme, a botanical display featuring a great variety of hydrangeas. At the same time, the church, crosses, former fortifications and memorial sites tell the story of different periods in the town’s history.

Culture and History

The parish church of Saint-Méen was rebuilt between 1837 and 1838, replacing a building thought to date from the 18th century. Among the older stone monuments is the Croix de Créac’h Mic, also known as Croas-Spernen: a two-metre-high, faceted monolithic cross dating from the 16th century. The Croix de Boulouarn is also two metres high and dates from the early Middle Ages.

The secular history of the area is also present in several places. The Calvaire de Coz Castel was erected in 1632 by the sculptor Roland Doré and is 4.50 metres high. The motte of Quillimadec can still be seen in Saint-Méen today. Certain defensive structures of the Château de Morizur can likewise still be seen in Saint-Méen.

The Croix de Kerougon commemorates nine members of the Kerougon Maquis resistance group who were shot on 14 July 1944. Memorial ceremonies are held at the Kérougon Massacre Memorial in remembrance of the resistance fighters who fell in this massacre. Dating back even further is the former settlement of Oc’h-ar-Mor, regarded as the origin of the town and associated with the future Vorganium, present-day Kerilien. The temple, circus and cemetery of this settlement are still visible.

Nature and Trails

The Boucle des deux vallées route passes through small woods, secluded valleys and sunken lanes. It leads to the Vallée de la Flèche, a quiet watercourse approximately 8 to 10 metres wide. Thus, alongside the historic sites, the townscape also features secluded natural areas and a clearly identified watercourse.

The Quillimadec is a small coastal river; its catchment area covers 79 km.
