Plougastel-Daoulas: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

In Plougastel-Daoulas, an archaeological rock shelter leads far back into the past: Le Rocher de l’Impératrice was repeatedly inhabited by small communities around 14,000 years ago. Several dozen slate slabs bearing animal engravings have been preserved there; they are considered the oldest traces of this kind in Brittany.

History and culture

More recent traditions are also present in the town. The game du Péchou and the jeu de quilles are listed in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage. The Breuriez, a ceremony involving an apple tree, takes place in Plougastel-Daoulas on All Saints’ Day.

In the centre, the Musée du Pays Plougastel presents the history of the municipality, its strawberry-growing tradition and the traditional costumes formerly worn by the people of Plougastel. Its visit is designed to be immersive, playful and accessible, and also focuses on the traditions and craft skills of Plougastel. The museum has reopened with a completely renovated visitor route.

The strawberry is also the focus of the Fête des Fraises. The festival has been held in Plougastel-Daoulas every second Sunday in June for 80 years. It includes a float parade, Celtic circles and bagadoù.

A classified granite monument in Plougastel-Daoulas was built between 1602 and 1604. Around its base, 181 figures are arranged in two rows one above the other.

Landscape and trails

The protected natural habitats in Plougastel-Daoulas include dry coastal heathlands, mudflats and salt marshes, wet woodland, wet valley meadows, rocky tidal shores, maërl beds and seagrass meadows. Through the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique, Plougastel-Daoulas is connected to the Armorique UNESCO Geopark.

The GR34 runs through the north of Plougastel-Daoulas. There are also numerous hiking trails on which visitors can discover the natural and historical heritage. The Boucle Toull ar Ranig near Sainte-Christine is a hiking trail in Plougastel-Daoulas; the Sentier Les rives de l’Elorn-St Jean is laid out there as a walking and hiking trail.

Plage du Moulin Blanc, a beach, is located in the vicinity of Plougastel-Daoulas. Also nearby are le Château de Brest, a castle, Abbaye Notre-Dame, a historic site, Fort de l'Armorique, a fort, and Tour Tanguy, a historic site. Île Ronde, an island, is also located in the surrounding area.
