Penmarc'h: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Penmarc’h combines striking lighthouses, maritime history and a varied coastline. The Phare d’Eckmühl was inaugurated in 1897, is 65 metres high, has 307 steps and is classified as a historic monument of France.

Culture and History

The Vieux Phare de Penmarc’h now houses a maritime discovery centre with a permanent exhibition on the history of lighthouses. Another maritime testament is Le Papa Poydenot, a teak lifeboat built in 1900 that has been classified as a historic monument since 1992.

The Alignements de la Madeleine originally comprised 600 or 700 standing stones. They were arranged in four rows over more than a kilometre; today, around fifty re-erected standing stones remain there. The religious buildings also preserve special details: the Chapelle Notre-Dame de La Joie is located near the sea on the GR® 34, and its altarpiece dates from 1756. The Église Saint-Nonna contains four carved boats inside and fourteen on the exterior. They illustrate the development of shipbuilding from the late 15th to the mid-16th century.

La Tour Carrée preserves the west tower of the former Saint-Guénolé church, dating from 1488.

Coast and Nature

Les rochers de Saint-Guénolé are a protected natural area. At Plage du Ster, a 3.9-kilometre-long, south-facing beach stretches through a natural dune landscape.

Plage de Pors Carn is a one-kilometre-long family and sports beach. Swimming and water sports, including surfing, are possible there.

Water and Activities

The Centre nautique municipal de Penmarc’h offers hire of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, windsurfing boards and catamarans, as well as private lessons. The activities also include guided outrigger canoe trips along the coast of Penmarc’h.

Local Insights

At La Compagnie Bretonne, visitors can discover a traditional, family-run cannery. The visit complements the maritime and historical attractions with an insight into a local production facility.
